Wiki Back Online

Turns out the issue was not setting the variable correctly. It has been resolved and the wiki is back online. It should no longer allow anonymous edits or anonymous Talk interaction.

The timeout on the server side is something like 5 minutes to a log-in, so remember if you're editing the wiki to put all the information down in notepad, or use preview often!

Wiki Issues

After fighting with the wiki (not the one in e107, but the one in startide4/wiki) it came to my attention that bots have already located it and begun trying to flood my poor limited memory space with space messages in the Talk section of the wiki.

I had thought that I had come up with a way to nullify that, but appearently it just broke the wiki instead. It is past 3:00AM currently and I cannot remain awake to finish fixing it. None of the information has been lost, its just working with the configuration files that needs to be completed.

The wiki will change as follows: Anonymous users will no longer by able to edit or use the Talk pages, but can read normally. Anyone who wants to get an account on the wiki need only let me know, preferably through the Startide game itself. It pains me that such a creative thing would end up being swarmed with spam, but such is the life in the wild west of the internet.

Expect further news when the wiki is back up and restored.

The e107 / MediaWiki Kitbash

One of the major reasons for going for e107 was the much-vaulted media wiki plugin. Unfortunately for me, the plugin itself appears to be lost to the ages. The closest I've been able to come is an eWiki plugin, which is akin to trying to do a full encyclopedic rendition in hypercard -- doable perhaps, but ugly and hard to use.

MediaWiki has spoiled me with its extensibility and ease of use. Even someone as unversed in coding as myself can create a decent looking array of pages that almost emulates the use of Wikipedia! So time to dust off what's left of my coding hat and see if I can puzzle this out.

Hopefully by the end of this project, I will know a little more about PHP and MySQL, as well as doing authentication and themeing. In reality what I'll be doing is trying to shove the e107 log-in authentication system onto MediaWiki, shred the header for the use of the e107 header, apply a theme that pulls from e107, and allow the bar to be selectable which side it is on through the admin panel.

Can I do this? There's a chance of success. Will it be easy? Probably not, especially as I have to work my time around also getting a job, some income, and some debts paid off.

Possible Intelligent Life Located

Concerns over sensor readings from Pilot Ebony's shuttle led to a most unusual discovery. Despite the scanning done by the Startide IV AI Cluster, movements outside of the perimeter of New Hope have shown patterns of some form of intelligent life. This possibility will have to be fully explored as New Hope finishes its primary construction, to determine if there is a threat to the mission, or a potential survival ally.

While not yet discovered what form of intelligence, or even if it is a true Intelligent creature or some sort, a general order of being on guard has been issued by Commander Relyd Ashburn. As such all non-civilian personnel should remember to carry with them their armored fatigues, and a sidearm with two extra ammunition clips. The weapon is to be used only in a life threatening circumstance, and all discharges will be monitored and logged.

As the various life forms of Elandra IV have yet to show curiosity to the developing New Haven, the curiosity may simply be the natural order of the planet adjusting to the presence of the various facilities being put up.

The mission parameters of the Startide IV included landing on a near Earth-like planet without intelligent or space-faring life. Elandra IV has been shown in its initial scans to have both a healthy herbivore and carnivore species development, but no signs of mining or native equipment that effects the RF band.

e107 Taking over for the Wordpress/Wiki/PHPBB website.

Since Startide IV initially began development as a combination website and mush-server game, there has always been an issue with trying to get the three core components of the website to agree with a common log-in and session keys, as well as using this combined format to build upon a set of tools to allow the game to update, retrieve, and store information to the various sites.

Some broad examples of what the link between the two halves of the game were the ability to set up a basic character entry in the wiki upon completion of chargen, combining the web-based forum with the game-powered +bboard system (preferably using +bboard as another submission method for the forum), an online-based character generation system to supplement the room and command based chargen, and the ability for the game to pull information out of the wiki to supplement +help files. As the third incarnation of the website, obviously the first part of the plan has yet to come to fuition. A combined method of interaction between the three major components unlocks the potential to rig a php/SQL interface from the MUSH itself. It looks like e107 can do that.

So here the game sits, on top of the e107 CMS, with the forum plugin, and the wiki integration mod on standby to be installed. At least the news system is now up and running, allowing content updates to be accessible!

Server Reinstall Completed Successfully

Following expected downtime on wednesday, the server underwent some drastic changes to the partition table in order to resolve disk space issues. The issues came, unexpectedly, from a combination of poorly executed software updated and SQL table debris caused by a spam attack on one of the older forums.

The initial other upgrade was going to be to move from Ubuntu to true Debian, but as it turns out Debian seems to be unable to handle the server hardware RAID, and so was scrapped for trying a small distribution of Ubuntu, which installed just fine. A few extra hours were needed in order to remove much of the unneeded software that Ubuntu likes to bundle with their server platform, Apache 2 was added, and then the pennMUSH server needed to be recompiled to run on the new software base.

The largest catch was the re-compiling of pennMUSH, as several of the key libraries were not included in the initial build-essentials package, and several of the HSpace files had to be modified to put in additional #include statements to handle the library changes as well. With the pennMUSH and HSpace packages succesfully installed, the game server was back up and running, leaving only the website to be restored.

What was supposed to be a quick re-partition and reinstall turned into a full day affair.

Next scheduled downtime will be for the pennMUSH server itself, to update HSpace 5 from Alpha release 1 to Beta.
